United Way of Pierce County

United Way of Pierce County aims to make measurable improvements in the lives of people in our community by providing individuals and families with access to quality information about human service resources.  United Way of Pierce County believes Education, Income and Health are the foundation for a good life and supports these three impact areas by funding a safety net of essential human services. Our goal is to also address some of the systemic issues and achieve long-lasting changes that prevent problems from happening in the first place.

UWPC 2-1-1
United Way of Pierce County 2-1-1 is part of the statewide 2-1-1 system. Pierce County 2-1-1 serves as the central information point for Pierce, Thurston, and Lewis counties.  Our resource database is available by phone and via the Internet allowing access to information in multiple ways.  By providing current and accurate information, objective assessment and follow-up, Pierce County 2-1-1 creates an atmosphere where groups and individuals in need can find services quickly.

In 2008 United Way of Pierce County 2-1-1 answered over 62,000 calls, more than a 30 percent increase from calls taken in by 2-1-1 in 2007.   A majority of callers dial 2-1-1 looking for either rent or utility assistance followed by referrals for housing and emergency shelters.  However, callers looking to access transportation resources have been dramatically increasing.  We are responding to this need by maintaining accurate and up to date referrals transportation services and working through the Pierce County Coordinated Transportation Coalition (PCCTC) to ensure that Pierce County's transportation needs are addressed.

WIN 2-1-1
The Washington Information Network 2-1-1 (WIN 211) is a coalition of eight local I & R providers and United Ways from every region of the state.  On April 15, 2003, the Washington state legislature passed ESHB 1787 in support of the creation of a 2-1-1 system for the state and gave specific leadership responsibilities to WIN 2-1-1.

2-1-1 is now available to ALL residents of Washington State.  Pierce County 2-1-1 began taking calls through the statewide 2-1-1 system on July 18, 2006.  Being part of a statewide system - including sharing a database and phone system - allows flexibility during times of disaster and the ability to support each other as individual call centers as needed.
