The Road to Independence

Road to IndependenceThe Puget Sound Educational Services District (PSESD) operates The Road to Independence WorkFirst Van Program. This program provides rides to work and employment-related activities for eligible participants in East Pierce County and South King County.

To qualify for transportation services with our program, riders must be considered low-income, as determined by the Federal Poverty Guidelines, reside in a location in which there is limited and/or no public transit available and/or would be unable to transport themselves to their destination.

An appropriate agency must refer all riders to the Road to Independence.

Our hours of operation are from 6 am to 6 pm, Monday through Friday. We are closed on all major holidays. While we do provide transportation for people with special needs, our vehicles are not accessible, so riders must be ambulatory. Our drivers are in training and therefore are not able to exit their vehicles to assist riders.

The following guidelines are in place for all riders in our program:

  • Riders must be prepared to be picked up or dropped off 30 minutes before the scheduled time.
  • Drivers do not exit the vehicles for any reason to assist riders.
  • All cancellations or schedule changes must be made 24 hours in advance.

To inquire about our program, schedule or cancel a ride, please contact Robin Dawson at PSESD at
